NightSnore requires iOS 17.6 or later. This covers the vast majority of iPhones in use today — if your phone received an iOS 17 update, you're good to go.

Compatible models include iPhone XS, XR, and all iPhone 11 through 16 models. No additional hardware required.

Battery & Storage

Less than you might expect. Because the screen stays off all night, NightSnore's actual battery impact is surprisingly low — around 1.5–2% per hour of monitoring on modern iPhones. On an iPhone 16 Pro, a full 7-hour session used just 12% of battery in real-world testing.

Monitoring durationEstimated drain
4 hours~6–8%
7 hours~10–14%
9 hours~13–18%

Older iPhone models or those with degraded batteries may use slightly more. Actual usage also varies by iOS version, ambient temperature and background activity.

💡 Most people can monitor all night without worrying about battery. If you want to be safe — or if your battery health is lower — just plug in while you sleep. NightSnore works perfectly while charging.

NightSnore only records the audio snippets around detected snore events — not the full night. Recordings are saved in compressed AAC format at 32 kbps.

Snoring levelRecording per night
Mild (<10 events/hr)~2–5 MB
Moderate (10–30 events/hr)~5–20 MB
Severe (>30 events/hr)~20–50 MB

Session statistics and event logs are stored separately in a local database and take only a few kilobytes per night.

⚙️ You can control storage use from Settings. Set independent retention periods for recordings and for session data — for example, keep logs for 3 months but delete audio after 2 weeks.

Microphone recording and our lightweight on-device analysis put minimal load on the CPU. In normal room-temperature conditions, you should not experience unusual heat.

If you charge overnight, placing the phone on a hard flat surface (rather than a pillow or blanket) helps dissipate heat. Avoid covering the phone while it charges.

Using the App

Place your iPhone on your nightstand or nearby surface with the microphone facing toward you, at a distance of roughly 20–50 cm (8–20 inches).

The microphone is typically located at the bottom edge of the phone. You don't need to prop it up or use a stand — lying flat on the nightstand works fine.

💡 NightSnore's noise floor adapts automatically throughout the night, so you don't need to worry about background noise or perfect placement.

No. Once monitoring starts, you can lock your screen and put your phone down. NightSnore runs in the background all night using iOS's audio background mode.

A Live Activity will appear on your lock screen showing real-time stats — so you can glance at your snore count without even unlocking your phone.

NightSnore uses frequency and intensity analysis to distinguish snoring from other sounds — it doesn't just detect any loud noise. Events that don't match snoring patterns are logged separately as "other sounds," keeping your report clean.

For best results, place the phone closer to you than to your partner. The microphone naturally favors nearby sound sources over distant ones.

If your partner also snores, some of their events may appear in your report — there is currently no way to attribute sounds to a specific person.

NightSnore is designed and optimized for the built-in iPhone microphone. Using AirPods or a Bluetooth headset while sleeping is generally impractical, and audio routing behavior may vary.

We recommend using the iPhone's own microphone for the most consistent and reliable results.

Regular notifications and alerts do not affect monitoring. An incoming phone call may interrupt audio recording — to avoid any disruption, we recommend enabling Do Not Disturb or Sleep Focus before you start.

Privacy & Data

No. All audio capture and analysis happens entirely on your device using Apple's on-device frameworks. Not a single byte of audio ever leaves your iPhone.

Your session data, snore event logs and recordings are stored in your iPhone's local database. You can delete everything at any time from Settings → Delete All Data.

🛡️ NightSnore collects anonymous usage statistics (e.g. how long monitoring runs) via TelemetryDeck to help improve the app. This data contains no personal information and cannot be linked to you. Read our full Privacy Policy →

No account, no sign-up, no email address required. Open the app and start monitoring. It's that simple.

Health & Results

No. NightSnore is a personal tracking tool, not a medical device. It cannot diagnose sleep apnea or any other condition.

Its data — Snore Index, event timeline, multi-night trends — is designed to help you understand your patterns and have more informed conversations with your doctor. If you're concerned about your snoring or sleep quality, please consult a healthcare professional.

Snoring varies night to night based on sleep position, alcohol, fatigue, allergies and other factors. A single night is a data point, not a verdict.

We recommend monitoring for at least 7 consecutive nights to get a reliable baseline. The Trends view will show you patterns across multiple sessions once you have enough data.
